Detroit: Now a Ghost Town



Once a crowded urban center, Detroit ghettos has become a large city with many buildings and too few people. By mid-2008, its population had dropped to 912,062, about half the number of residents in 1950.

Here is some Numbers showing the population in Detroit for the past 10 years.

Rise of the Suburbs (50's - 60's)
New highways began driving residents out of the city, and 7000 to 9000 Detroit household change from White to Black each year during 50's and 60's.

As auto industry disappeared, so did people. Since 1960, the number of Detroit Residents working in manufacturing jobs has dropped about 87%. 

Sky-High Vacancy Rate. (2009)
Almost 400,000 postal addresses in Detroit in 2009, about 20% are unoccupied.
